Expert Statement

I am interested in the psychological roots of citizens’ (political) beliefs. I mostly study the role of personality and emotions. I have extensively studied whether citizens rationally update their beliefs or are motivated to defend their intial positions. In this line of research we also show that some people are more capable and motivated to defend their beliefs, while others are more easily swayed. My work on personailty based tailoring shows that persuasion is more likely to occur when communication is tailored to a persons’ personality.
